Risks and Recovery
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that prepares the jaw for dental implants, and like any surgical procedure, it carries risks and recovery considerations.
Possible risks include:
- Swelling, bruising, or discomfort in the days following surgery
- Risk of infection or delayed healing
- Graft failure, where the body does not integrate the grafting material
- Sinus involvement, depending on the location of the graft
Recovery considerations:
- Initial healing typically takes one to two weeks
- Full integration of the grafting material can take several months before implants can be placed
- Soft foods and gentle oral hygiene are usually recommended during early healing
- Your dentist will provide specific aftercare instructions and schedule follow-up visits
