Sinus Graft/Lift
Sinus Graft/Lift Bondi, Bondi Junction, Sydney
1 Introduction
A sinus graft is a specific type of bone graft that may be required if you intend to replace upper back teeth with dental implants. The teeth in this area are closer to your sinus cavities which are large air filled spaces, so the jawbone is naturally thinner and less able to support dental implants. By adding bone to this area, Dr Poulos can ensure your dental implants will be surrounded by strong bone and fully able to support your new implant teeth.

What Is a Sinus Graft?
To carry out a sinus graft, Dr Poulos will make a small incision into your gum, exposing the bone. He will make a tiny window in the bone that will expose the membrane in between your jawbone and your sinus cavities. The membrane is carefully lifted upwards, creating space for your bone graft. It is a well-established technique, and we will take care to keep you as comfortable as possible during your treatment.
Risks and Recovery
A sinus graft is a surgical procedure to prepare the upper jaw for dental implants, and like any surgical procedure, it carries risks and recovery considerations.
Possible risks include:
- Swelling, bruising, or discomfort in the days following surgery
- Risk of sinus membrane perforation during the procedure
- Sinus infection or inflammation during healing
- Graft failure, where the body does not integrate the grafting material
Recovery considerations:
- Initial healing typically takes one to two weeks
- Full integration of the graft can take several months before implants can be placed
- You may be advised to avoid blowing your nose, sneezing forcefully, or using straws during early healing
- Your dentist will provide specific aftercare instructions and schedule follow-up visits
